OZAMIZ CITY, Misamis Occidental (PIA)--“Consumers play a very crucial role in driving sustainability outcomes; with every purchase, individuals have the power to have a positive impact on society and economy.”
Luz G. Galda, OIC provincial director of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Misamis Occidental, highlighted in an episode of Let’s Talk MisOcc, a media forum in Misamis Occidental, that this year’s Consumer Welfare Month celebration focuses on the crucial role of sustainability and its impact on society and the economy.
The theme, Gen S: Generation Sustainable, is adapted from an international concept of the 7 Rs, which are Rethink, Refuse, Reuse, Reduce, Recycle, Repurpose, and Repair.
"By choosing products and services that are environmentally friendly, socially responsible, and economically viable, consumers can create a more sustainable future,” she said.
The campaign is not only for the young but for all consumers.
“Sustainability is not only targeted to the young generations; we, as adults, can start now, as a consuming public, to be conscious by using the 7RS,” she emphasized.
There are many ways to drive sustainable outcomes. One is to choose products that have an environmental impact, such as products that are made of recycled materials.
“These reduce demand for new materials and conserve natural resources,” said Galda.
Next is to choose products with minimal packaging, which reduces waste and helps reduce pollution.
Another is to support companies with sustainable practices and buy locally.
“You can help the micro, small, and medium enterprises in our locality nga ang ilang gi-rpoduce [that they produce] ilang [they] i-patronize,” she added.
Choose products with a long life span and look for certifications.
Lastly, vote with your wallet. Consumers can use their purchasing power to choose companies and products that align with their values by choosing environmentally friendly and socially responsible products. Through this, consumers can send a message to companies that sustainability matters and encourage them to adopt more sustainable practices.
Galda urged consumers to implement the 7 Rs in choosing products and consuming goods according to their daily needs. “We can start it now,” she said. (JMOR/PIA-10/Misamis Occidental)
