Revitalizing Sibugay's Buri Artistry: Empowering Artisans and Empowering Communities

IPIL, ZAMBOANGA SIBUGAY, July 18 (PIA) - In the realm where talent and opportunity intersect, individuals blessed with remarkable ingenuity often find themselves hindered by a scarcity of resources. Meet Evelyn Dela Torre, an exceptional resident of RT Lim town in the picturesque Zamboanga Sibugay Province, nestled within the heart of Zamboanga Peninsula Region (Region 9).

Evelyn stands as an extraordinary artisan who has devoted her life to the art of Buli creation, a traditional craft deeply rooted in the craftsmanship of cabbage palm. Despite the adversities she has encountered at the age of 54, Evelyn's unwavering dedication, coupled with the promising support of governmental assistance, fuels her hope for a future brimming with possibilities.

Crafting a Lasting Legacy

Evelyn's fascination with the art of Buli-making blossomed during her childhood, as she embarked on her artistic journey at the tender age of 14 while her peers indulged in dolls and playhouses. Despite the lack of formal education, Evelyn honed her skills through unwavering determination and hands-on experience. Over time, her mastery of the craft has metamorphosed simple creations into exquisite works of art. With the unwavering support and fervor of her family, Evelyn has successfully established a small-scale enterprise, producing stunning handmade items that proudly showcase the rich cultural heritage of her region.

The Struggle for Resources

Whilst Evelyn's talent knows no bounds and her creativity seemingly boundless, her primary challenge lies in accessing the essential capital required to scale up her business. Recognizing the significance of supporting local artisans and nurturing sustainable livelihoods within marginalized communities, government agencies such as the Departments of Labor and Employment (DOLE) and Trade and Industry (DTI) have expressed their keen interest in extending their assistance.

A Beacon of Hope

Evelyn's unwavering commitment to her craft has not gone unnoticed. Her exemplary expertise captured the attention of the RT Lim Municipal Police Station (MPS), which graciously invited her to share her experiences with a select group of Indigenous Peoples (IPs) residing within her community. In a collaborative effort with the DTI and the Department of Labor's Public Employment Service Office (PESO), the RT Lim MPS spearheaded the "Adoption of Sustainable Buli/Buri Craft Production as RT Lim Best Practice," a program aimed at providing IPs with invaluable skills that empower them to cultivate sustainable livelihoods, thereby breaking free from the cycle of vulnerability that makes them susceptible to recruitment by groups such as the CPP-New People's Army (NPA).
