Nurturing Dreams: BFP Zamboanga Sibugay's Inspiring "Adopt-a-Student" Program

IPIL, Zamboanga Sibugay, Sept. 07 - In the heartlands of Zamboanga Sibugay, a transformational initiative is taking root, one that transcends the traditional boundaries of community service and extends a helping hand to nurture young talents.

The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) Zamboanga Sibugay, under the dynamic leadership of FSupt Jacquelyn S. Ortega, DSC, has embarked on an extraordinary mission called the "Adopt-a-Student" program. This program embodies the essence of compassion and the belief that every child deserves an opportunity to shine, irrespective of their financial circumstances.

FSupt Ortega, a beacon of community engagement and education, has set forth a visionary mandate that has ignited the spirit of camaraderie within the province. Every fire station within Zamboanga Sibugay now bears the responsibility of sponsoring at least one deserving scholar. Twenty fire stations, each symbolizing a beacon of hope, have come forward to "adopt" a student, regardless of whether they are in elementary, high school, or college.  The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) and the Department of Education (DepEd) have played pivotal roles in identifying these student-beneficiaries.

The core objective of this noble endeavor is to illuminate the educational path for talented young individuals who might otherwise find themselves constrained by the heavy burden of financial challenges and difficulties. What sets this project apart is that it is a testament to the unity and resilience of Zamboanga Sibugay. The "adopted" students receive not only essential school supplies but also a weekly allowance, thanks to the dedication and generosity of the fire station staff.

FO1 William Julius A Barron of the Public Information Section shared, "All staff of each fire station contribute from their personal pockets to provide a weekly allowance of P900 to our adopted students. We are committed to this sustainable support until each student proudly graduates."

Zylryn’s  tale, inspiring the  youth

Among the many inspiring stories, the Office of the Provincial Fire Marshal's selection of Zylryn T.Abao, a dedicated Grade 12 student from Ipil National High School, stands out.

Zylryn, a living embodiment of determination and resilience, has carved a special place in the hearts of his teachers and mentors. His life is a testament to the adage that talent knows no boundaries, and dedication knows no compromise.

Despite the daily struggle of being a self-supporting student, Zylryn has managed to excel both academically and athletically. His commitment to his education knows no bounds. To supplement his education, he sells Puto Maya and other goods, demonstrating unwavering dedication to his studies.

Currently, Zylryn resides with his teacher, Mr. Elren Pancho, who also serves as his boxing coach. This arrangement exemplifies the close-knit nature of the community, where individuals rally together to support and nurture promising talents.

FSupt Ortega said, “through the 'Adopt-a-Student' program, we aim to provide deserving students like Zylryn with the support they need to reach their full potential. We believe that education is a powerful tool for change, and we are committed to making a positive impact in our community."

Indeed, Zylryn T. Abao's journey serves as an inspiration to all. It is a shining testament to the belief that with determination and the unwavering support of a caring community, individuals can surmount any obstacle and realize their dreams.

The "Adopt-a-Student" program, initiated by the BFP Zamboanga Sibugay, is not just a program; it is a beacon of hope. It signifies a commitment to nurturing the dreams of deserving students, fostering a brighter and more promising future for the entire province and its youth.
