DOST unveils hi-tech plans for Intramuros

The iconic Walled City of Intramuros in Manila will be the recipient of new technologies and innovation-based solutions that mark a significant stride toward a more immersive and sustainable cultural heritage experience.

The landmark event, hosted by the Intramuros Administration at the iconic Fort Santiago and located within the historical place, featured Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Secretary Renato U. Solidum, Jr. unveiling an ambitious plan to blend technology with heritage.

"In this historic walled city of Intramuros where its ancient structures bear witness to the convergence of Filipino history, culture, science, technology, and innovation. Pamana Agham, a celebration of the Filipino spirit where tradition and innovation collide to showcase the greatness of our Philippine history and heritage is indeed a unique way of blending two seemingly disparate themes, Filipino heritage and scientific progress," he said.

Among the projects enumerated by Secretary Solidum are the mobile application, the bioreactor technology for waste management, the electric tranvia, also the training provision for food safety and halal-certified food.

The DOST chief announced plans to develop a mobile application spotlighting Intramuros' tourist sites, enhancing the visitor experience with user-friendly (immersive) features.

Designed to enhance the tourist experience, this mobile app will serve as a comprehensive guide offering real-time information on historical sites, attractions, dining options, events and more, providing an interactive and informative platform for both local and international tourists.

Additionally, he introduced the deployment of bioreactor technology for the decomposition of biodegradable waste to be utilized in the greening and solid waste management programs that will serve the five barangays (villages) within the walled city.

Moreover, the DOST will transform the historic tram system into an electric tranvia, all part of a broader effort to bolster sustainability and environmental consciousness within the area.

Acknowledging the collaborative efforts of various government agencies and organizations, including the Department of Tourism, the City Government of Manila, and the Intramuros Administration, Secretary Solidum commended their roles in realizing this remarkable endeavor.

"Congratulations to the DOST NCR, Department of Tourism, City Government of Manila, and Intramuros Administration for this successful celebration of the brilliance and creativity of the Filipino people through the lens of science and technology," Secretary Solidum stated.

The event showcased the potential of science, technology, and innovation to enhance art and tourism, protect cultural heritage, and empower local communities. It aimed to instill an awareness and appreciation for the pivotal role of science and technology in our daily lives.

Secretary Solidum emphasized that science and technology should be accessible to all, regardless of their level of expertise. "You don't need to be smart. What's important is to use the products of smart people for your everyday life. Those people are smarter," he stressed.

He also highlighted the collaborative nature of the DOST, emphasizing that when people approach the department; they tap into the collective expertise of specialized offices working in unison.

Also part of their upcoming projects designed to provide science and technology-based support to food merchants in Intramuros, include food safety training, Halal-related training leading to certification, and the introduction of a food safety grading system to ensure the quality and safety of food within the area.

In the spirit of promoting the convergence of culture, history, science, and technology, Solidum also unveiled the launch of a TV show entitled "Science Pinas," which set to showcase the impact of science and technology in areas where DOST has intervened. The objective is to educate the public and instill a culture of science, technology, and innovation.

The event brought together experts and leaders to share their perspectives on how science, technology, culture, and history can interlace to forge a more sustainable and prosperous future for the Philippines. Intramuros, it was suggested, could serve as a platform for discussions on vital topics such as climate change and global warming, enlightening the public on the imperative of preserving culture, history, and the environment.

He also encouraged everyone to participate in the diverse activities Pamana Agham had to offer. He extended an invitation to explore DOST technology exhibits, join in guided tours of Fort Santiago, visit the bazaar featuring DOST-assisted micro, small, and medium enterprises, and engage in the photography challenge capturing the beauty of Intramuros. Above all, he urged everyone to enjoy the camaraderie and celebrate Filipino heritage and scientific advancements.
