NNC highlights pandemic recovery on Nutrition Month 2022

ILOILO CITY (PIA) -- The National Nutrition Council (NNC) underscores the importance of nutrition as the country is already leaning towards COVID-19 pandemic recovery and endemic phase.

As mandated by Presidential Decree 491, or the Nutrition Act of the Philippines, NNC leads the annual celebration of National Nutrition Month to create greater awareness among Filipinos on the importance of nutrition.

According to NNC 6 Regional Nutrition Program Coordinator Reginaldo T. Guillen, in an online Kapihan program, this year’s National Nutrition Month theme “New Normal na Nutrisyon, Sama-samang gawan ng Solusyon!” calls for strengthened nutrition interventions toward nutrition improvement as the country shifts towards living with the COVID-19 virus.

“Since we have experienced two years with COVID, klaro pa rin na ang NNC nananawagan na ipagpatuloy yung ating

mga nagawang intervention during the community quarantines of the pandemic,” Guillen said.

Aside from the threat of the virus itself, the lockdowns and restrictions caused the limited movement of people, goods, and services which consequently slowed the economy.

Such consequences disrupt the delivery and availment of health and nutrition services leading to the prevalence of hunger and malnutrition.

Guillen noted that, during the height of the pandemic, NNC has issued various advisories to mitigate the impacts of the pandemic. These include the continuance of breastfeeding to infants and children and the purchase of fruits and vegetables from farmers and utilized for family food packs.

Such, along with other initiatives like community gardens and pantries sprouted during lockdowns, must be continued, according to him, especially among the most vulnerable and far-flung areas in the region.

He also encouraged all local officials to formulate and implement their respective local nutrition action plans that should align with the upcoming Philippine Plan of Action on Nutrition 2023-2028 this August. (JBG/FRG/PIA6)
