'Paeng' hits over 135K residents in Western Visayas

ILOILO CITY (PIA) -- As Tropical Storm "Paeng" continues to affect the country, the Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (RDRRMC) 6 report showed that 135,025 residents in Western Visayas are afflicted, as of today, October 29.

During the recent press briefing, RDDRMC Emergency Operation Center (EOC) manager and Office of Civil Defense (OCD) 6 Operations Section head Melissa Banias said that the number of individuals, which constituted 39,217 families, are from 259 barangays across the region directly affected by the storm.

The report also reflected that some 5,367 families in Western Visayas are displaced, which breaks down to 4,443 inside various evacuation centers composed of 17,167 individuals, while the remaining 924 families or 3,577 individuals are outside or temporarily sheltering with their nearest kin.

In terms of casualties, the RDRRMC EOC confirmed two deaths in relation to TS Paeng with one each from Capiz and Iloilo including a 25-year old female and a 28-year old male, respectively.

“We are also receiving reports of deaths from other areas but still under validation,” said Banias.

With the prevailing gale warning in the region, all seaports are non-operational with 13 trips canceled per report. A total of 1,080 passengers are also stranded in Iloilo and Negros Occidental ports.

Various road networks and bridges are affected by the onslaught of TS Paeng comprising 37 roads and two bridges currently unpassable to all types of vehicles.

Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) Antique personnel conducts a rescue operation at Barangay Amparo, Patnongon, one of the badly-hit areas in Antique province.

Meanwhile, the latest OCD 6 advisory advises the public to refrain from unnecessary trips or travels due to unpassable roads in various areas in the region and cancellation of boat trips.

On the other hand, the heavy rains brought by the storm induced numerous 120 flood incidents covering almost 80 percent of Western Visayas mostly affecting the provinces of Aklan, Antique, and Capiz; eight landslide incidents were also recorded; and, one tree was uprooted.

As to the assistance provided, the RDRRMC 6, through its Food and Non-food Items cluster, to date, provided a

total of P2,850,329 worth of assistance by the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) and by the local government units (LGUs).

Of these, 4,047 family food packs amounting to P2,236,697 are already prepositioned and distributed by the DSWD.

Meanwhile, assets of the OCD 6, Bureau of Fire Protection, Philippine Army, Coast Guard Western Visayas District, local DRRMs, and other volunteers are on call in case of incidents being monitored in the course of this weather phenomenon. (JBG/FRG/PIA6)
