Stat Month puts DOH at the heart of the celebration

ILOILO CITY (PIA) -- The theme of this year’s National Statistics Month (NSM) “Accelerating Progress: Promoting Data and Statistics for Healthy Pilipinas” is placing the Department of Health (DOH) at the heart of the celebration this October.

This is according to Dr. Ma. Sophia Pulmones, Assistant Regional Director of the DOH Western Visayas-Center for Health Development, who emphasized the value of data and statistics in achieving better health outcomes in her message at the opening ceremonies of the 34th NSM celebration in Western Visayas on Oct. 4.

She said collected data and building on the accomplishments of the past health sector, the DOH developed the 8-point agenda which reflects the agency’s commitment to achieving the goals of Universal Health Care and the realization of a Healthy Pilipinas.

“It recognizes the importance of other determinants of health and places every Filipino at the center of healthcare reforms. It emphasizes community involvement in health promotion and acknowledge the vital role of healthcare workers,” said Pulmones.

The 8-point Agenda is designed with emphasis on action to fast-track health sector improvements, focusing on the tangible outcomes for every Filipino, community and healthcare workers and health institution.

Pulmones is also hoping that this health information and data will be turned into valuable insights by which they could identify, prioritize and implement strategic policies, programs and initiatives not only in the local level but regionwide.

On the other hand, Regional Statistics Committee Chairperson and National Economic Development Authority 6 Director engr. Arecio Casing also stressed the need to continue to foster the understanding of fundamental principles and relationships between data which are essential in making informed decision during the event.

“With a solid and efficient local statistical system, the dream of a “Matatag, Maginhawa at Panatag na Buhay” is within our reach,” said Casing.

He cited that the region’s socio-economic blueprint for development, the Western Visayas Regional Development Plan 2023 – 2028 includes data driven targets, strategies and policies to improve health support systems and provide inclusive

access to quality, equitable and wholistic health care for the people.

Casing formally opened the regional celebration which has been regarded as the best one in the country for the last two years.

This year, Western Visayas is vying for the coveted Circle of Excellence Award, a recognition given to the region with the best NSM celebration for three consecutive years.

More than 200 participants from the national government agencies, local government units, academic institutions, private organizations and media joined the opening program of the regional celebration preceded by a zumba activity held at the activity center of SM City Iloilo. (AAL/LAF/PIA6-Iloilo)
