‘Chikiting Ligtas’ campaign reaches over 100K WV children

ILOILO CITY (PIA) -- More than a week since it was launched, the “Chikiting Ligtas” campaign of the Department of Health (DOH) in Western Visayas for Measles, Rubella and Oral Polio Vaccine Supplemental Immunization Activity (MR OPV SIA) has vaccinated more than 100,000 children aged below 5 years old.

Based on the DOH 6 report covering the period of May 1 to 5, a total of 113,583 children aged nine to 59 months old were immunized with measles and rubella vaccines. The number constitutes 17.21 percent of the target eligible children of 660,054 to be inoculated against the said diseases in the region.

Meanwhile, some 103,737 children aged zero to 59 months old, or 13.47 percent of the 769,881 target eligible children aged zero to 59 months old, received the oral polio vaccine.

With this accomplishment, DOH 6, through a press statement, is encouraging all parents with children below five years old to visit the nearest health centers or vaccination sites in their areas to avail the opportunity to have their children protected against vaccine-preventable diseases.

“The vaccines that are given to our targets for this campaign are safe,

effective, free, and have been regularly used during their routine immunizations. More importantly, these vaccines are readily available in most health centers and vaccination sites,” the statement stressed.

To note, DOH 6 is ramping up the drive for this immunization activity to prevent a possible outbreak of the aforementioned diseases.

During this month-long immunization campaign, the health department is also reminding parents and guardians to be vigilant of the signs and symptoms of any heat-related illnesses as they line up for the immunization services.

They are advised to bring safe drinking water, towel, fan, extra shirt, face masks and alcohol, and if necessary, maintenance medicines.

Meanwhile, members of vulnerable groups such as the elderly, pregnant, and the immunocompromised are guided to stay at home. (AAL/FRG/PIA6)
