DOH extends ‘Chikiting Ligtas’ to June 15

ILOILO CITY (PIA) -- The Department of Health (DOH) in Western Visayas announced the extension of the Measles, Rubella, and Oral Polio Vaccine Supplemental Immunization Activity (MR-OPV SIA) dubbed “Chikiting Ligtas” until June 15.

Dr. Jose Martin Atienza, DOH 6 National Immunization Program (NIP) regional coordinator, noted that the inclement weather is expected to affect the SIA implementation, noting the decrease in vaccination sessions.

To note, the Chikiting Ligtas is being conducted through house-to-house, and in temporary and permanent posts as determined by their respective local health offices.

“Parents would not risk bringing their children to health centers to be vaccinated due to the heavy rains. Because of this, the DOH sets up a meeting with the provincial and city health offices to re-strategize and reach these target children after the weather clears up,” Atienza added.

He also said that their Agency has already released several advisories with strategies for mop-up in order to reach the 95 percent target population of the region and discussed them during their operation center meeting.

Based on the DOH 6 report, as of May 30, the region reached 77.15% coverage on the Measles-Rubella vaccination. This translates to 509,214 children aged nine to 59 months old out of the 660,054 target population.

Meanwhile, for the bivalent oral polio vaccine, some 133,707 children aged zero to 59 months old were immunized out of the 239,105 regional target or 55.92% accomplishment.

Within the same period, Negros Occidental recorded the highest accomplishment among provinces and

highly urbanized cities in the region in both MR and bOPV with 85.95 percent and 73.09 percent, respectively. (AAL/FRG/PIA6/with reports from DOH6-CMU)
