BOAC, Marinduque -- The province celebrated a significant milestone as the Department of Science and Technology-Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI) revealed the qualifiers for the 2023 DOST Undergraduate Scholarship Program.
Out of the 279 examinees who participated in the pen-and-paper exam held at Marinduque National High School (MNHS) on March 18, an impressive 32 academically talented students from Marinduque secured their spots in the prestigious scholarship program. This achievement marks an outstanding passing rate of approximately 11.47 percent for the province, reflecting a remarkable increase compared to last year's 1.35 percent passing rate.
The DOST-Mimaropa expressed its gratitude to the Department of Education-Marinduque for their unwavering support. Teaching personnel, who were DOST graduate scholars conducted comprehensive review classes for six consecutive Saturdays from January 7 until February 11, across five high schools in the province. This collaborative effort undoubtedly played a vital role in enhancing the students' knowledge and preparedness for the rigorous scholarship examination.
To qualify for the scholarship, the successful candidates are required to enroll in a Bachelor of Science degree program within the priority fields of study. They can choose to pursue their studies either at a state university or college or at any private higher education institution that holds recognition from the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) as a Center of Excellence or Center of Development, or possesses Federation of Accrediting Agencies of the Philippines (FAAP) Level III Accreditation for its BS program.
The scholarship program offers a comprehensive package of benefits to the qualifiers. In addition to receiving a monthly living allowance of P7,000, they will have their tuition fees covered up to P40,000 per academic year.
Furthermore, they will receive learning materials or a connectivity allowance of P10,000 per academic year, a clothing allowance worth P1,000 for the first semester if in their freshman year, a transportation allowance equivalent to economy-class round trip fare for those studying outside their home province, a thesis allowance of P10,000 and a graduation allowance amounting to P1,000.
The Provincial Science and Technology Office-Marinduque (PSTO-Marinduque) will organize an orientation session for the newly qualified scholars during the first week of July. Said orientation aims to familiarize the scholars with the program's guidelines and provide them with the necessary information to embark on their academic journey successfully.
The DOST remains steadfast in its commitment to provide scholarships to talented and deserving students, while also ensuring a steady and competent supply of science and technology professionals who can contribute to the nation's progress. The department continues to encourage students to apply for various scholarship programs it offers, further emphasizing its dedication to promoting scientific and technological advancement in the country.
